That last sentence is why this article exists. As a general dentist, I care less about ranking brands than about one pattern parents deserve to see plainly: the products bought specifically to be safer for children were, in this dataset, the most contaminated category in the store — for the person least able to avoid swallowing them.

Why did the "natural" products test worst?
The dataset contained its own explanation — the strongest evidence in the whole study. Two raw ingredients were tested alone, with no product around them: single-ingredient calcium carbonate came back at 292 ppb lead and 274 ppb arsenic; single-ingredient hydroxyapatite at 269 ppb lead and 59 ppb arsenic. The ingredient itself — not sloppy manufacturing — is the source. Clay, chalk, and mineral powders are dug out of the ground and carry whatever the deposit carried. The rough risk ranking that falls out of the data: bentonite clay ≫ calcium carbonate ≈ hydroxyapatite > titanium dioxide > hydrated silica, which is synthesized and tested lowest.
One more inversion worth naming: organic certification does not include heavy-metal testing, and no US regulation currently caps heavy metals in toothpaste. Nobody is required to check. The marketing sells the absence of one ingredient without disclosing what replaced it.
How worried should you actually be?
Honestly: for most adults, not very — and the caveats deserve equal billing with the headline. Toothpaste is expectorated, not swallowed; a pea-sized amount is about a quarter gram and most of it leaves your mouth, so the absorbed dose is a small fraction of the measured concentration.
